About the Author

R. Byron Bird (“Bob”) was born in Bryan, Texas, on 5 February 1924. After finishing high school in Washington, DC, he started chemical engineering at the University of Maryland in 1941. In mid-1943 he was inducted into the army, went through basic training in Alabama, and to Officer Candidate School in Edgewood Arsenal, Maryland. He was then assigned to the 90th Chemical Mortar Battalion
